FAQ - Frequently asked questions about the topic
What is the difference between web hosting, a dedicated server and cloud hosting?
Our cloud hosting offer stands out for its flexibility and user-friendliness. You configure the technical features yourself and, in doing so, select the individual components for your hosting; we then handle the entire server setup. What's more, we also handle all updates – including all necessary security updates. In short, with the managed cloud, you enjoy the benefits whilst we do the work.
With a Cloud Server, you also configure the server yourself and select the processor and operating system. However, unlike cloud hosting, with a cloud server you are responsible for security and updates.
As an alternative to the above package, you can also take advantage of our web hosting offers. Web hosting provides you with available web space on our server, enabling you to host your own website, and more. The performance capabilities are the same, and security updates are handled entirely by us.
Who is cloud hosting designed for and how does it work?
Managed cloud hosting is especially suited to users who want flexible customization of their server performance. This is therefore a great option for young companies, for example, who initially want to start with a small online shop but expect heavy visitor and customer traffic in the future. With our cloud hosting offer, you can easily and immediately adjust the available services, as the resources can be individually scaled at any time. Whilst the performance of our smallest package is fixed, the larger packages can be configured at any time in terms of processor performance, memory and data storage. All services are available around the clock, and potential changes are implemented immediately. No matter which managed cloud hosting package you choose, security and updates are handled by us. However, you are responsible for all the content that you provide—including web apps and their updates.
How secure is cloud hosting?
Our data centers are among the most secure systems in Europe, and easily satisfy the strict German data protection regulations. In the event of hardware failure, the resources are spread across other hardware components and your offers are automatically recovered. For the time being, our managed cloud is only available with Linux as an operating system. However, we are already planning for it to be available with Windows.
Of course, we constantly review the system for security and keep it up-to-date. With our managed cloud hosting, you have no root access to the system—it is therefore not possible to accidentally create security loopholes. Rather, with the managed cloud, you can count on our overall know-how to ensure that your server is secure and protected.
How scalable and efficient is cloud hosting?
The biggest advantage of the managed cloud from 1&1 is the easy scalability of the available resources and its precise billing. With the more comprehensive packages in particular, sliders enable you to conveniently increase the components for processor cores, memory and hard drive space. Equally, if you require less performance and want to decrease the resources used, this is also no problem – except for SSD space. It is only with the starter package that the individual components cannot be adjusted; this is to keep it as simple and clear as possible. Our cloud hosting enables you to be flexible and ensures you only pay for the services that you use. So if after the first third of the month you decide to increase your server's performance, you will only pay for increased performance for the last two-thirds of the month. Billing and activation of services takes place in real time. What's more, you needn't worry about downtime or a server reboot.
What is a stack?
A stack is a software package that contains the entire infrastructure necessary for the smooth operation of the server. With our cloud hosting, you have the option of using either our standard LAMP stack (LAMP stands for Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP) or combining different technologies. Thus, for example, you could combine PHP and MySQL with an NGINX webserver.
Why do I need 1&1 stack management for cloud hosting?
Cloud computing encompasses a broad range of services and enables convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources—like networks, servers, storage, applications or other services. Cloud hosting also gives developers quick access to a stack of software that is commonly referred to as the cloud hosting stack. This stack contains all the software necessary to run an application and enables you to make the most out of your server infrastructure. With 1&1 stack management for your cloud hosting, you can tailor your stack to your application, so it only includes features relevant to you. For example, if you run a WordPress blog, make sure your stack only includes software that is applicable to WordPress. You can either choose from our preassembled stacks, or create your very own—1&1 offers highly customizable stack options suitable for any application. Combine the freedom and flexibility of a cloud server with the security of a managed stack using 1&1 stack management for cloud hosting.
